There are several ways one can try and cheat or live on the edge.

Let me cover a bit of the basic differences here:

White Hat SEO – this is the main stream of SEO out there.  The accepted ‘norm’ of what is allowed and what is not.  White Hat SEO is also Safe, and you will never get penalized or banned for it.

Black Hat SEO – this is the complete opposite.  Things like stuffing keywords in your title, or hiding text or making it so small no one can read it anyway is all part of Black Hat.  The techniques here may actually get you rankings, but the sustainability, especially on Google is almost 0.   A day or two at most, and thats if you lucky.  And of course, your website and perhaps even your IP (Internet Portal Address) will be banned.

Blue Hat SEO – this is a relatively new concept, and is basically somewhere in between white and black hat.  These wizzards are the ones that take risks and test the boundaries to see what they can do.

I feel an example of Blue Hat may be using Javascript to hide a piece of keyword rich text or links.  The Javascript hides it from viewers, but seen Google claims to be able to read javascript now, picks it up and credits you for it.

Or is this bordering on Black Hat?

Only time will tell…

Basically what this means is that Twitter has finally grasped the idea of how powerful real time search is  – search Twitter now for the latest thing people are talking about.

And, in other news, MSN and Yahoo have made a deal regarding their search engines – it seems Yahoo will now be powered by Bing in a last ditch attempt to take on the Google Giant.

This Wizzard, for one, sees it as too little too late, and trying to take on a dragon with a match stick.

And in other news, I read a post on SEOMOZ today about a sneaky script that got a ‘viagra’ website ranking on the first page of Google.  Yup, it seems Google slipped up and missed the fact that this site got 1000′s of links through completely unrelated blog sites where they managed to hide a link.

The link is invisible to humans, but seems to have been picked up by the search engine and was ranked for them.

Crafty little Black Hat there….

Hard, yes, tricky a bit, but impossible no.

The main idea is to ensure that you have a standard, text only website that will load if a user doesnt have flash installed.  This text only site must be 100% identical to the information carried on the Flash version.

The tricky bit here comes in that a search engine might decide that you are ‘cloaking’ or hiding the html and you could get penalised for it.  But, without the risk, it is unlikely your Flash website will have any chance of ranking on any search engines.  Risk it, or loose it.  Worse case scenario is that you have a pretty website that gets no traffic.

Some of the best tools are from SEOBOOK.com  – namesly their Firefox plugins: The SEO tool bar, and the SEO tool for firefox.

Firefox is also a must for any would be SEO practicioner.  And if you are into the social scene, such as Twitter or Facebook, then Flock (a browser built on Firefox technology) is a definate must – this browser ties in all your social sites into one side bar so that you can monitor the action while surfing your favourite sites.

Remember, the key to SEO is learning. and every tool, no matter how bad it may be, will teach you something!

PS  Always use a spell checker!

Google will be sending out around 50 000 or so invites (hopefully chosen randomly, but undoubtedly people that are active users of their services) in September this year.
